The Foundation

A Legacy Reclaimed

Sankofa's Child was born from a deep-seated recognition that true wellness cannot be separated from cultural identity. The concept of "Sankofa"—a word from the Akan people of Ghana meaning "to go back and get it"—serves as our guiding principle. We believe that looking back to the wisdom, art, and healing practices of our ancestors is essential for moving forward into a thriving future.

Our journey began as a grassroots initiative, bringing together educators, artists, and healers who saw a critical gap in holistic resources that honored African diasporic heritage. What started as small community workshops quickly blossomed into a sanctuary for cultural learning and profound personal transformation.

Our Philosophy

Culture as a Pathway to Healing

We operate on the fundamental belief that culture is not merely performative; it is a vital technology for healing, connection, and growth. When individuals are disconnected from their roots, a profound sense of displacement occurs.

By reintroducing traditional practices—through storytelling, rhythm, movement, and visual arts—we provide our community with the tools to navigate modern challenges. This grounding fosters a resilient spirit, enabling individuals to stand firmly in their identity and contribute powerfully to the collective well-being.
